Description / Expertise
Late Nineteenth century Japanese bronze crane standing on a turtle. During a great flood the Crane had no place to rest until a Turtle rose from the floodwaters and welcomed the Crane to rest on his back. Many years later there was a terrible drought and the Crane came to the rescue of the turtle lifting him away to a thriving lake. This Meiji period figure is represented by the crane
( Tsuru ) for longevity' and by the turtle ( Kame ) for conjugal happiness.
