Description / Expertise
Beautifully painted miniature on ivory of Hebe mounted in a high carat gold frame set as a brooch. This is similar to the miniature of Miss Mary Meyer as Hebe. Mary Meyer was daughter of Jeremiah, a well-known miniaturist, . Here she is seen poised in front of Jupiter, being depicted in the guise of an eagle, she looking back at the viewer. In her hands she holds a jug full of nectar.
Hebe is the daughter of Zeus and Hera. Hebe had two children with Heracles, Alexiares and Anicetus. The name Hebe comes from the Greek word meaning "youth" and many famous woman chose to be painted as Hebe such as Marie Antionette in 1773 by François-Hubert Drouais,
Louise Henriette of Bourbon, Duchess of Orléans as Hebe by Jean-Marc Nattier in 1744.
Hebe was a popular subject in art from about 1750 to 1880 and many artists added an eagle as in this miniature.
